Books that offer hope

A project of great significance for me. I worked in South Africa from 1994 to 1998, and there was an urgent need for books to help the country move past the legacy of apartheid. One of these projects was The South African Women’s Health Book (Oxford University Press). The book needed to be designed to be understood by readers that had been denied any formal education, the aim being to provide information about primary healthcare, especially in rural villages with no access to doctors. Despite great constraints of budget, the photography and illustrations make this look a very upbeat book, and very much a product of a forward-looking South Africa.
